Badlands (1973). Spiritual Movie Review - Jacklyn A. Lo

In the movie Badlands (1973), director Terrence Malick the protagonist, is a young soul.

no confidence

Like any young soul, Kit lacks confidence in himself. He chooses a girl who is much younger than him.

Firstly, Holly is almost a kid; moreover, she is not someone who grabs guys’ attention.

Meanwhile, the girl’s father does not make efforts to help the couple.

no help

For example, he does not advise Keith to continue his education and does not help him find a better job, but he expresses aggression and violence towards the young couple.

As a result, he kills Holly’s dog and intimidates Keith by calling the police.

young soul

This drop of hatred works as a catalyst in Kit’s young soul. It is probably one of the first times he experiences life in a human body.

Kit’s mind doesn’t have any values yet, including human life. As a result, he can kill people so easily.

emotion field

Also, the young man has an undeveloped emotional field.

He lacks pity and remorse. He doesn’t hate people, nor does he experience joy in their suffering. That is to say, that is an additional confirmation that he is a young soul.

like a child

Moreover, in the face of danger, Keith acts like a child.

For example, he tells his girlfriend that the man he robbed was lucky because he gave him a note with stolen things, which would make the victim very popular.

karmic payment

Prison, suffering, and the electric chair are the karmic payment for Kit’s bad deeds.
